Yeah the Mozilla thing is pretty cool. I'm excited for it anyway. And as far as UX goes, I should have addressed this in the post itself, but I believe that if you build a platform and a protocol and give that to the community, then the UX will work itself out. Far better experts than me can come up with a way to make the front end shiny and usable, especially if the big players buy into it (which I think they are ready to do, given the circumstances). Ideally competition in the space would be heavily based around usability anyway.

I'm not sure I understand your last point about letting the market decide. I think that *is* what I'm advocating. I just also happen to be advocating for a particular approach to win in the market :).

If Mozilla's Identity Manager gets the Weave treatment, it might get even closer to your ideal vision. Still, this stuff is way too confusing and seemingly unnecessary to the average person. They're used to having tons of usernames and passwords or they're used to just having Facebook (and maybe email). It's a big mess. And what's wrong with letting the market decide (even though I hope they don't)?

It'd be great if the market always worked for the benefit of humanity like the laissez-faire economists seem to think it does. That's another rant for another time though. In the meantime please see http://www.shuttlebum.com/2010/05/11/online-identity-profile/ and let me know if you have any questions. I definitely think a market solution is preferable and I'm starting to finally think that's a possibility in the not too distant future. Facebook pissed off most of the people who build things on the internet with this latest play.

I planned on saying something snarky along the lines of "Let the market decide.", but now instead I'm hoping for a comment as to why we shouldn't let the market decide. While some people might be leaving facebook, the swarms of people sacrificing privacy to play Farmville seem to indicate a secure future for our friend facebook. Who should step in and what should they do?

I'm reading this way after it was posted, but I thought it was interesting.

Faith is an interesting concept that many people, I believe, don't understand fully. I don't think it is "blindly following a set of beliefs." If I have faith in a person it would be because I previously had evidence of that person coming through in past experience. I once was made fun of by an "open minded" atheist for the concept of faith in god. The ironic thing was that this atheist was very interested in politics and had great "faith" in one politician in particular, but this person would never use that word for it. It showed a jaded reaction to past experiences with those who do believe in god.

Something I do believe is that you should question even if you were brought up to believe something it doesn't mean it's true. Truth is not always what you want it to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't the truth. Complacence is the enemy of truth.

Yeah I stopped caring about my audience a long time ago. It's still really hard to write anything I don't hate, but freeing yourself from your audience helps some. If I wanted to try to make a popular blog or something I'd recommend picking a niche and sticking with it. Then you'd at least have a decent idea of your audience.

Interesting. This would help me with my blog, too. Part of the reason I never update is because I can't hone in on an audience/identity and it feels all over the place. If I had a more solid idea of my audience, I'd probably write posts more naturally. Of course, with RSS you don't know who is subscribed and who isn't, so you can't group them.

@Mahmoud that looks cool, I'm might have to work it in somehow.

@BPo Yep, it's pretty obvious hard-hitting social commentary. If you don't get it you must not "get" "art" at "all."
