It's still really hard to write anything I don't hate, but freeing yourself from your audience helps some. If I wanted to try to make a popular blog or something I'd recommend picking a niche and sticking with it. Then you'd at least have a decent idea of your audience. This would help me with my blog, too. Part of the reason I never update is because I can't hone in on an audience/identity and it feels all over the place. If I had a more solid idea of my audience, I'd probably write posts more naturally. Of course, with RSS you don't know who is subscribed and who isn't, so you can't group them. Interesting.
